Newtown Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 3; Victims Rushed to 37 Military Hospital | Discuss Ghana

On Monday morning, March 30, 2026, Interior Minister Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed that the death toll from the Accra Newtown Experimental School building collapse has risen to three (one male and two females).

Following a grueling 18-hour overnight operation led by the 48 Engineers Regiment and the Fire Service, the Minister provided a final verified breakdown of the casualties.

Casualty and Hospital Update

A total of 23 people were caught in the collapse of the 14-year-old uncompleted structure. While 20 individuals were successfully rescued alive, many remain in critical condition and have been distributed across various health facilities:

37 Military Hospital: At least five critical cases were referred here from the Mamobi Polyclinic early this morning for specialized trauma care.

Police Hospital: Several other survivors are currently receiving treatment here.

Mamobi Polyclinic: This facility served as the primary stabilization point for most victims immediately after they were pulled from the rubble on Sunday.

Private Facilities: At least one survivor was taken to a nearby private clinic in the Newtown area for emergency attention.

Demographics of the Victims

The Minister highlighted that a significant number of those affected were women and children who were attending a Sunday service inside the "makeshift" church:

CategoryCountStatus of Deaths
Females152 Deceased.
Males81 Deceased.
Minors (Children)7Zero (All 7 children were rescued alive).

Government Action: A "Death Trap" Investigation

Minister Muntaka Mubarak, alongside Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, emphasized that the state is now shifting from "rescue" to "investigation and accountability":

Forensic Audit: The structure was a 14-year-old project that had previously been declared unfit and earmarked for demolition by the assembly.

Negligence Probe: Authorities are questioning why a building deemed a "death trap" was permitted to host public gatherings for over a decade.

National Reset Order: All "Experimental" school buildings in the region are currently under a 48-hour safety inspection order to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.

"We have visited all the hospitals to ensure the numbers being shared are accurate. Our hearts are with the 20 survivors as they fight for their lives this morning." — Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
