NADMO Deployed to Tema Newtown as Floods Submerge Homes | Discuss Ghana

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were deployed to Tema Newtown to lead emergency salvage operations following a heavy dawn rainstorm that left several low-lying communities submerged.

The "dawn deluge," which began around 3:30 AM, caught many residents asleep, forcing families to flee their homes as floodwaters rose rapidly, destroying household appliances, furniture, and personal documents.

The Rescue & Salvage Operation

By 6:00 AM, NADMO teams, supported by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) Disaster Committee, were on the ground to assist the most affected areas, particularly the Sea-Light and Bankuman neighborhoods:

Asset Recovery: NADMO officials were seen wading through waist-deep water to help residents move refrigerators, mattresses, and electronics to higher ground.

Evacuation: Vulnerable residents, including the elderly and children, were moved to temporary shelters at local school blocks and community centers.

Waterway Clearance: Teams are currently working to clear debris from choked gutters and culverts to allow the trapped floodwaters to recede into the Chemu Lagoon.

Why Is Tema Newtown Flooding?

The severe impact of this morning's rain is being attributed to a "perfect storm" of environmental and structural factors:

GMet Forecast: The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) had previously warned that the 2026 major rainy season would see above-normal rainfall along the coastal belt, starting in March.

Wetland Encroachment: Recent investigations by Citi News highlighted that unauthorized industrial construction on the Tema Heavy Industrial Area wetlands has blocked natural drainage paths, causing water to back up into residential slums.

The "High Tide" Factor: Reports from residents indicate that the high tide in the Gulf of Guinea at dawn prevented the rainwater from draining effectively into the sea, essentially "swallowing" parts of the Newtown.
