More Than Just a Pitch: President Mahama Unveils Vision for Commercialized Stadiums | Discuss Ghana

On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, during the first leg of his "Resetting Ghana Tour" in the Bono Region, President John Dramani Mahama expanded on his administration's ambitious sports infrastructure plan.

The President pledged that the government will begin building three modern stadiums this year, with a long-term goal of constructing new facilities annually to ensure every region has a "fit-for-purpose" sporting arena.

The "Entertainment Hub" Concept

Moving away from traditional, single-use sports grounds, President Mahama outlined a "lifestyle and commerce" model for the new developments:

Integrated Facilities: The new stadiums are designed to be multi-functional hubs housing shops, restaurants, and entertainment areas.

Economic Sustainability: By including commercial spaces, the President explained that the stadiums will generate their own revenue to cover maintenance costs, reducing the burden on the national treasury.

Community Focus: "We want to build stadiums... offering food and entertainment for everyone," the President stated, envisioning the facilities as daily destinations for families rather than just match-day venues.

Part of the "Seven-Stadium" Promise

This year's planned three stadiums are the first phase of a larger commitment first announced in late 2025:

Targeting New Regions: The broader plan aims to build seven new stadiums across the country, specifically targeting the six newly created regions—Ahafo, Bono East, North East, Oti, Savannah, and Western North—along with other regions currently lacking standard facilities.

The "Black Star" Landmark: A flagship project under this vision is the proposed Black Star Stadium near Accra, envisioned as a $1.2 billion futuristic, star-shaped smart stadium with solar power and integrated luxury amenities.

School Sports Authority: To ensure these facilities are used effectively, the President also reiterated the establishment of a School Sports Authority with its own dedicated budget to identify and nurture young talent across these new sites.

Context: The "National Reset" for Sports

The stadium initiative is a key pillar of the "National Reset" agenda, which seeks to transform sports from mere entertainment into a viable economic sector that contributes to GDP and youth employment.

2026 Budget Allocation: The Minister for Sports, Kofi Adams, confirmed that the first phase of these stadium projects has been fully captured in the 2026 national budget to ensure immediate commencement.

Bono Region Priority: During his current tour, the President assured residents that the Bono Region would be among the primary beneficiaries of this infrastructure "facelift".

"Our goal is to develop a new ecosystem where sports is seen as a sector that contributes to Ghana's economic growth." — President John Dramani Mahama.
