Renowned visual artist and CEO of Red Clay Studio, Ibrahim Mahama, is currently receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Tamale following a violent encounter with a police unit on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
The artist alleges he was brutally assaulted by members of the IGP’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as the "Black Maria," while returning from Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
The Incident: "Everything Was an Assault"
According to Ibrahim Mahama and eyewitness reports, the altercation began during heavy traffic near the Mariam Hotel in Tamale:
Traffic Dispute: The artist's uncle, who was driving their Toyota bus, reportedly questioned police officers who were attempting to bypass the gridlock.
The Escalation: After a verbal exchange, officers allegedly forced their way into the bus and began "beating and punching" the occupants.
Evidence Deletion: Mahama claims the officers forced him to unlock his phone and deleted video footage he had recorded of the incident.
Injuries: Images shared online show Mahama with a blood-soaked shirt, a cut lip, and a broken tooth. His uncle also sustained injuries during the scuffle.
Police Response: Denial of "Black Maria" Involvement
The Ghana Police Service has issued a formal statement regarding the incident, though it disputes key parts of the artist's account:
Unit Withdrawal: The police claim the "Black Maria" team could not have been involved because the unit was officially withdrawn from the Northern Region on March 5, 2026.
Provocation Allegations: A counter-statement from DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil (leader of the Special Operations Team) suggests the incident was a "traffic enforcement operation" that escalated due to "offensive conduct" and "provocative remarks" by the driver.
Mob Action Claim: The police suggested that agitated road users—not officers—were responsible for the physical attack, and that officers actually intervened to prevent "mob action".
Ongoing Investigations
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, has ordered a dual-track investigation into the matter:
Criminal Inquiry: Conducted by the Northern Regional Police Command.
Professional Standards: A parallel probe by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate potential officer misconduct.
Ministerial Condemnation: Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf Mboridiba has condemned the act as "lawlessness" and noted that Mahama’s status as a diplomat makes the attack even more serious.
