Hassan Ayariga Warns of Lack of Youth Preparation at 69th Independence Anniversary | Discuss Ghana

On Friday, March 6, 2026, Dr. Hassan Ayariga, founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), delivered a sobering assessment of Ghana's progress during the nation's 69th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

While attending the ceremonial parade at the Jubilee House, Ayariga criticized the country's education and governance systems for failing to adequately equip the younger generation for future leadership.

Critical Gaps in Youth Preparation

Ayariga expressed deep concern over whether the current generation of young Ghanaians is ready to inherit the nation's mantle:

Failure to Innovate: He argued that the national education system has failed to train young men and women to be thinkers and innovators, leaving them unprepared to do more than follow "the usual" paths.

Corruption and Integrity: Ayariga specifically noted that the youth have not been shielded from or prepared to resist the systemic corruption that plagues the country.

Leadership Readiness: He posed a pointed question to current leaders: “If we decide to hand over this country to the younger generation, will they be able to take over?”.

Self-Reflection: Ayariga concluded that until the nation shifts its focus to preparing the next generation to fulfill the vision of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's journey toward true independence remains incomplete.

Critique of Post-Independence Leadership

Reflecting on the 69-year journey since 1957, Ayariga highlighted a perceived decline in leadership quality:

Declining Chain of Leaders: He argued that while Ghana was on the "right path" under its first president, subsequent leaders have failed to build on that foundation, often doing "less" instead of "better" than Nkrumah.

Winner-Takes-All Politics: He condemned the persistent "winner-takes-all" political mindset, which he believes divides the nation and prevents continuous progress when power changes hands.

Need for Inclusion: Ayariga called for a more inclusive system where every citizen feels part of the leadership structure, regardless of political affiliation.
