Baseless and Problematic: Kwakye Ofosu Rejects Galamsey-Goldbod Connection | Discuss Ghana

In a sharp defense of government-linked economic structures, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communications, has dismissed attempts to associate illegal mining (galamsey) with Goldbod as "problematic" and entirely without merit.

The Minister’s statement, issued on Sunday, March 1, 2026, aimed to decouple the regulated gold trade from the environmental and legal issues surrounding illegal mining.

"Absolutely No Evidence"

Kwakye Ofosu characterized the ongoing discourse as a "persistent baseless attempt" to tarnish the reputation of state-overseen gold initiatives:

No Linking Evidence: The Minister stated categorically that there is "absolutely no evidence" linking the operations of Goldbod to illegal mining activities.

A "Problematic" Narrative: He described the effort to connect the two as "problematic," suggesting it is a deliberate attempt by detractors to create public mistrust.

Protection of the Gold Industry: Ofosu emphasized that Goldbod operates under strict regulatory frameworks designed to ensure transparency in Ghana's gold sector.

Distinguishing Operations: The administration maintains that while galamsey is a criminal environmental issue, Goldbod is a strategic economic vehicle for national growth.

Policy and Economic Context

This defense comes as the government continues to promote its ORAL (Overhauling, Restructuring, and Accelerating Leadership) framework to boost the "Orange Economy" and national revenue.
