On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, announced that structural works at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange will resume shortly following a temporary suspension triggered by severe gridlock.
The Minister provided the update during a working visit by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to the Ministry, where they discussed the progress of the $350 million Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project.
The Suspension and Safety Rationale
The project team suspended a planned four-month traffic diversion on March 10 after the first day of implementation resulted in "unacceptable" congestion that stranded commuters for hours.
Risk of Heavy Beams: Minister Agbodza explained that the current phase involves launching T-beams to expand the bridge from six lanes to ten lanes (adding three lanes on each side).
Safety Non-Negotiable: He emphasized that because these beams are extremely heavy, work cannot proceed without restricting traffic to ensure the safety of both construction personnel and motorists.
Ongoing Review: Project Manager Ing. Ben Sackey noted that the team is currently revising the traffic management scheme to find a "better solution" that minimizes real-world impact compared to the initial simulation.
Vice President’s Call for Patience
During her visit, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang urged the public to cooperate with the Ministry, noting that road infrastructure is the backbone of the "National Reset" agenda.
Collaborative Governance: Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated that her tour of the ministries is intended to "close perceived gaps" and ensure the Presidency is directly supporting sector-level delivery.
Public Outreach: She urged the Ministry to maintain "regular engagement" with the public to manage expectations during the four-month construction window.
Project Status: Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion
The Tetteh Quarshie expansion is a critical component of the broader motorway project, which is being executed by the wholly Ghanaian-owned firm Maripoma Limited.
