Afenyo-Markin Calls for NPP Unity to Win 2028 | Discuss Ghana

On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to embrace a "mighty hug" of reconciliation and unity to secure victory in the 2028 General Elections.

Addressing TESCON executives and party faithful, the Effutu MP argued that internal cohesion is the only way the NPP can overcome the "failed promises" of the current NDC government and return to power.

The "Unity Over Division" Strategy

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the path to 2028 requires the party to move past the friction of the recent January 31, 2026, Presidential Primaries:

The "Mighty Hug": He called for a symbolic and practical "mighty hug" between different camps within the party, particularly after the heated contest between Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other aspirants.

No Room for Factions: The Minority Leader warned that weaponizing internal support for different candidates would lead to a "dangerous precedent" and collective failure in 2028.

Bawumia 2028: Afenyo-Markin reiterated his full support for Dr. Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer, stating that "God willing," the Vice President will lead the NPP back to the Jubilee House.

Critique of the Current NDC Gov't

The Minority Leader used the platform to slam the ruling NDC for what he termed "economic mismanagement" in 2026:

Cocoa Prices: He criticized the reduction in cocoa prices, calling it a "betrayal" of Ghanaian farmers by the NDC.

Electricity Tariffs: He pointed to the "repeated increases" in power bills as evidence that the current government has failed to protect the pockets of ordinary Ghanaians.

Voice of the People: Afenyo-Markin claimed that if elections were held today, the NPP would secure a parliamentary majority because of the growing public frustration.
