"Fasten Your Seat Belts": Mahama’s Vision of an Economic Takeoff | Discuss Ghana

In a powerful and metaphor-rich 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered on Friday, February 27, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama signaled that the "Reset" phase of his administration has successfully transitioned into a growth phase.

Addressing the 9th Parliament, the President used a vivid aviation metaphor to describe the current state of the Ghanaian economy: "Our nation is on the runway, it’s in takeoff mode, and you are all advised to fasten your seat belts".

The "Runway" Metaphor Explained

The President’s choice of words was designed to shift the national narrative from the "distress" of 2024 to the "acceleration" planned for 2026 and 2027.

The Runway (2025): Mahama described his first year back in office as the period of stabilizing the "shaky" infrastructure he inherited. He cited the reduction of inflation from 23% to single digits and the stabilization of the Cedi as the "clearing of the runway".

Takeoff Mode (2026): He argued that with the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill now assented to and the "ORAL" (Operation Recover All Loots) initiative recovering state assets, the engines of the economy are now at full throttle.

Fasten Your Seat Belts: This was both a warning and an invitation. The President cautioned that "acceleration" often comes with the turbulence of rapid change and reform, but promised that the destination is a "Fairer, More Inclusive, and Prosperous Ghana".
