Accra-Kumasi Expressway: 2.5 Hours Between Ghana’s Two Largest Cities | Discuss Ghana

In his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, February 27, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed the government's commitment to the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, describing it as a "headline project" under the "Big Push" infrastructure agenda.

The President confirmed that the proposed 198.7 km six-lane high-speed motorway is specifically designed to slash the current five-hour travel time to approximately two and a half hours.

Technical Profile: Ghana’s First True Expressway

Unlike existing trunk roads, this project is being built to international expressway standards, featuring a new alignment that bypasses traditional traffic bottlenecks.

The Design: A six-lane main expressway (175 km) designed for speeds up to 120 km/h, with an additional 23 km of urban connecting sections.

Limited Access: As a "limited-access" motorway, it will feature eight major interchanges to ensure seamless flow and high-speed safety.

The Route: The expressway will run through the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, touching key towns like Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, and Ofoase, and entering Kumasi via the Lake Road (Bosomtwe) side.

Green Infrastructure: In a first for the region, the project includes electric vehicle (EV) charging stations integrated into 24/7 service areas.

Funding and Management

President Mahama announced a new institutional framework to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability and transparency:

Special Purpose Vehicle: The government has established Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, a subsidiary of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), to oversee financing and construction.

Domestic Financing: Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has emphasized a preference for domestic resources, with GH₵30 billion allocated for the broader road component of the Big Push programme in the 2026 Budget.

Concession Model: The project will operate under a user-pay concession arrangement of up to 50 years.
